Hi!

Thanks for getting in touch with us, sorry for the delay on the response, we've been out biking this summer! (ha?) The bikeshare program allows students to rent bikes from one of three locations on campus, but does not limit students to only riding them on campus grounds. We encourage students to take the bikes downtown Burlington, to the beach, out shopping and wherever they like as long as they bring it back to any of the three locations within four hours. We are trying to extend the amount of time students can use the bikes by having students register online for a bike beforehand so we can gauge the availability of bikes in case students would like to use them for longer trips. The campus bike shop is currently in a precarious position. In the past we occupied a space near the loading docks in our student center, a small, difficult to find and intrusive spot. After months of searching (and pleading!) for a place on campus, we were given this space with the intention that it would be only for the purpose of repairing the bikes within our bikeshare fleet. Of course, we became very popular and students with personal bikes were coming in for tune-ups as well. The bike shop (we call it "The Hive") as well as the BUG club is entirely run by dedicated student volunteers who just simply love the program, bikes and bike initiatives. It's a tough job to keep it running smoothly with enough enthusiasm, but the payoff can be extremely rewarding! Let us know if you have any more questions and good luck!

I hope that you might answer this question. I am a graduate student at a school in Massachusetts and we have been asked to examine some of the bike share programs at other universities. We are looking at UVM. It sounds very interesting. I am just wondering two things: can you use the bikes from the BUG program off campus or only on campus AND is the bike shop where bikes are repaired something located on campus and operated and staffed by volunteers at the university (like BUG members)? Thanks!

Here's a letter that was received by the Office of Sustainability:

I would just like to thank the anonymous member of the UVM Bicycle Users
Group for leaving a letter on my bike, warning me of recent thefts of
bicycles and warning me to get a better lock. I honestly appreciate their
concern for fellow bikers and it's great to know there are people out there
who care about other students. Later tonight, I passed this warning on to
another friend who thanked me just as well. I know it was a simple gesture,
but it meant a lot to me, as my bike is my life. Once again, I appreciate
your concern, and I WILL certainly buy a better lock!

Thanks,
Adam
